A Letter from Pete Walley, Zeke Walley's father:
Zeke Walley was a member of the 1988 Jackson Young Lawyers baseball team. He loved to play the game of baseball. In the middle of the 1988 NJYB season, Zeke was injured in an accident that took his life shortly after it occurred. Zeke played left field for the team, and he batted and threw left handed. He was 12 years old, 53 tall, weighing 130 pounds. His team number was 13. Zeke was a student at First Presbyterian Day School, a member of Boy Scout Troop 8, First Baptist Church, and a member of First Baptist Sunday School. He was a Christian.
Zeke was not the allstar or key player of the team, but was as steady and dependable as any coach would want on a team. Zeke was as avid a player of baseball as any 12 year old I knew. One of the last set of words I heard him say was telling one of his teammates to get the throw into home.
The Zeke Walley Tournament was started in 1988 by the North Jackson Youth Baseball board, and it has been played every year since then. A plaque resides in the NJYB concession stand building as a memorial to him. His family thanks NJYB for continuing to remember him and his love for baseball.
